Taha Asia Pacific Ltd (TAP), the New Zealand subsidiary of Taha International Corporation has opened a new Aluminum Dross recycling plant in New Zealand. The opening of the TAP recycling plant in NZ, is part of Tahas’ plan to expand its Dross recycling operations worldwide. The Taha Asia Pacific plant will be recycling Aluminum from Smelters and from the Dross stored in landfills at Tiwai. Managed by its General Manager, Mr. Mark Egginton, the plant will initially employ 23 people to be increased to meet production requirements.

WHY RECYCLE DROSS

Dross, a waste by-product of the smelting process, is a mass of solid impurities floating on a molten metal. The process offers a means of reducing the amount of residual waste from primary and secondary Aluminum manufacturers that ends up in landfill by converting waste products into saleable commodities.

THE PROCESS

Dross is delivered to the plant from the smelter and transported to a crusher where it is broken down. Wet dross from the smelter’s landfill is first dried and then put through a separation process; metal is returned to the smelter and the rest is stored to be used to make fertilizer.

The depleted dross is separated by mechanical means and what remains is a high grade mineral, known as Aluminum Oxide. The extracted metal is then processed even further in a specialized furnace to ensure that the client receives the highest possible return.

The Aluminum oxide is then converted into various products but it is mainly used in the manufacture of mineral fertilizer internationally approved and certified in Germany and the European Union. The staff will also regularly test and analyze fertilizer blends to create custom product to suit individual crops and locations.

In Bahrain, Taha is operating a recycling plant for its clients Gulf Aluminum Rolling Mills (GARMCO) for the processing of all their Dross and is in the process of building a Plant in the South Alba Industrial Zone for the manufacture of Aluminum tri-hydrate (ATH).

TAHA’s INNOVATIVE RECYCLING PROCESS
Taha’s leverage and advantage is that it has developed an environmentally sensitive, efficient, and cost-effective process to separate Aluminum from dross, and produce fertilizer from the Aluminum oxide residue. To achieve this, Taha employs a Hot Dross Processing System, whereby the majority of metal is recovered without the need for additional energy or additives.
